Benihikari is a dedicated wakocha (Japanese black tea) cultivar bred from Cn1 and Benikaori, registered in 1969 during Japan's post-war effort to develop domestic black tea production. Among Japanese black tea cultivars, it holds an important historical position as one of the earliest purpose-bred varieties. Its most appealing quality is a sweet, berry-forward aroma — reminiscent of strawberries and raspberries — that deepens into rose and honey notes upon full oxidation, creating an aromatic profile of considerable elegance. The astringency is gentler than Indian or Sri Lankan black teas, allowing the natural sweetness and fruity character to take center stage in a way that is distinctly Japanese. Though cultivation declined sharply when cheap imported tea dominated the Japanese market, the recent renaissance of artisan wakocha has brought renewed attention to Benihikari as one of the finest heritage cultivars for Japanese black tea production.

Brew with fully boiled water to extract the full spectrum of flavor. Unlike many black teas, wakocha is best enjoyed straight — its natural sweetness and low tannins make milk unnecessary. Pairs beautifully with wagashi (Japanese confections) and light pastries.
